Why Basement Mold Symptoms Get Worse in a Cleveland Winter

The worst month for basement mold symptoms in Cleveland is not August. It is closer to February, when the basement has been damp since the thaw before last and the house has been shut tight since Thanksgiving.

The reason is the air path. A furnace or air handler standing in a damp basement is the busiest machine in the house from November through April. It draws its return air from the room it sits in, through ductwork that in an older house is rarely airtight. Then it delivers that air upstairs to the bedrooms. Nothing about the basement changed. The delivery schedule did.

Why does the heating season push basement air upstairs?

Because a tall old house behaves like a chimney all winter. Warm indoor air rises and leaks out through the attic hatch, the top plates and the chimney chase. The house replaces it from somewhere low.

In a Cleveland colonial or a Cape Cod, low means the basement: the rim joist, the gaps around the sill, an old coal chute, the crawl under a back addition. The colder it gets outside, the harder that pull runs.

The heating system doubles it. Return ducts run under negative pressure, so every seam and joint on the return side draws air out of whatever room the duct passes through. In plenty of houses here the return is not even a duct. Joist bays were panned with sheet metal and pressed into service as return chases. A panned joist bay is open to the foundation wall it dies into. Whatever is on that wall gets sampled by the furnace several times an hour.

House shape decides how hard that pull runs. A three story colonial in Cleveland Heights or Shaker Heights has a tall warm column and a long way for air to rise, so on a hard January night the stack effect is strong enough to feel at the basement door. A single story ranch in Parma or Brook Park has almost no height to work with. The basement air still reaches the bedrooms in that house, but it arrives through the ductwork rather than up a stairwell.

Add a bedroom directly over the furnace room and the picture is complete. That room receives the largest share of delivered air, all night, with the door shut.

A second winter mechanism is worth knowing about. A whole-house humidifier mounted on the furnace exists to take the edge off dry heated air. Set it too high and leave it running as the outdoor temperature drops hard. Indoor humidity climbs until every cold surface in the house starts collecting it: the inside of exterior walls, closets on the north side, the window frames that stream every January morning. The basement is not the only place a shut-up house can grow something in February.

Closed bedroom doors sharpen it in a house with too few return openings. Supply air keeps arriving, the room pressurizes a little and the air has to leave around the door and through the wall cavities. What that room is breathing all night is whatever the system last picked up downstairs.

What the symptoms actually look like

They are upper respiratory and allergic, not dramatic. Nasal congestion that will not clear, sinus pressure, post-nasal drip, a scratchy throat, a cough that hangs on for weeks, itchy or gritty eyes, sneezing fits, a dull headache and the sort of tiredness a good night of sleep does not fix. Some people get skin irritation. People with asthma get wheezing, chest tightness and more rescue inhaler use than usual.

Sensitivity is not evenly spread. Household members with asthma or allergies feel it first and hardest. So do people on treatment that suppresses the immune system, along with infants and the very old. It is normal for one person in a house to be miserable while nobody else notices a thing. That difference is a real signal rather than a sign that somebody is imagining it.

Now the honest part. Every symptom on that list is also produced by a winter cold, a dust mite allergy, a cat and the dry air a furnace makes. Symptoms cannot identify mold. They can only tell you the house is worth looking at. Anyone presenting a symptom list as a diagnosis is selling something.

The pattern that carries information

Timing tells you more than the symptoms do.

Watch what happens when somebody sleeps elsewhere. Congestion that clears by the second morning away and comes back on the first night home is pointing at the building rather than at the person. A weekend at a relative's house is the cheapest test available and nobody has to buy anything to run it.

Watch the calendar. Trouble that starts when the furnace comes on and ends when the windows open in April fits the closed-house pathway. Trouble that peaks in a humid June fits a different one.

Watch the room. If the person sleeping over the furnace room wakes worst and improves by mid-morning, delivered air is the thing to examine. If everyone is wretched in the finished basement office and fine upstairs, the problem has not reached the ductwork yet.

Watch for what is missing too. Fever, body aches and a household passing an illness around in sequence look like an infection rather than a building. Exposure does not usually travel through a family one person at a time.

What to check before anyone samples the air

Some of this you can do this week.

Look at the filter and the filter slot. A gapped filter door on a basement furnace lets the blower pull unfiltered basement air straight into the supply side.

Look at the return ducts with a flashlight while the blower runs. Open seams, a disconnected boot and panned joist bays are common at this age and they are cheap to seal.

Look at the basement itself. Standing humidity, a dehumidifier draining into a bucket nobody empties, cardboard sitting on a cold slab, laundry drying in the open, a dryer vent that dumps into the room instead of outdoors.

Look hard at the dehumidifier before spending anything. Most household units lose capacity as the room gets colder and some stop pulling water at all in an unheated basement in midwinter. A machine humming away in a cold corner and collecting nothing is a common finding. The owner has usually crossed humidity off the list already because the dehumidifier is on.

If the questions are still open after that, testing has a real job to do. Air sampling is read as a same-day comparison of indoor air against outdoor air. Winter is the season that comparison is sharpest. With frozen ground and snow cover, the outdoor spore count is at its lowest of the year. An indoor reading in February sitting well above that baseline is a much louder result than the same figure would be in August, when the outdoor air is loaded with spores anyway. Seasonal contrast is what makes a winter test the more readable one.

Can mold in the basement make you sick in an upstairs bedroom?

Yes, if there is an air path. In a Cleveland winter there usually is one. Winter is often the better time. The outdoor baseline is low while the ground is frozen and snow covered, so an elevated indoor count stands out clearly against it. A summer test can be harder to read, because outdoor air in July is full of spores and the indoor number has to be judged against that.
